ive just noticed that (in school anyway) whatever subject we happen to be talking about everyone seems to understand/know the subject in the same sort of way, and if you ask about it (including myself) the answer is always "oh, its on wikipedia" ..
It just bugs me that knowledge in general is becoming totally homogenized because everyone using the SAME WEBSITE ALL THE TIME.----wikipedia.. I know there alot of benefits to it, but at same time i cant help but feel like a knowledge automoton ... like wikipedia tells us everything we need to know, nothing more, nothing less, like it or not..
Some of my professors say we're not allowed to use wikipedia on certain assignments, which is great, but it takes forever to come up with info without wikipedia. Seems like the only two choices are: the dumbed down version (wikipedia), or the scholarly-takes-100-years-to-get-to-point version....
is there any system/source/method in between these two extremes? Im not even talking about assignments exclusively, it seems that everyone knows the same amount and type of info about random factoids/subjects because 99% of us get it all from one source...
All that said, I am aware that wikipedia is actually comprised of many sources/minds and its benefits far outweigh any drawbacks, but im looking for alternative sources.. where do i start?? thanks
