Open Question: Why is Wikipedia taken seriously as a source of information?

I was trying to correct a simple spelling/grammar error on an article today, so I went to the talk page. wow. all problems/disagreements were solved simply by which side had more people saying this way or that way. wikipedia states "users have diverse OPINIONS so please be respectful" what the hell ? what does an opinion have to do with something that is supposed to be reliable and factual? if 100 people say something ignorant and wrong (factually) and one person is telling the truth, are the 100 people right simply because they out number the man? I then went to a bunch of other large articles, George Bush/Barack Obama for instance. and once again, changes to the text were decided by a quasi vote. Why are teachers recommending this bogus website to their students? Why is it so popular? and Why do the owners not care about what a joke their method of verifying information is?
