Open Question: Why does Wikipedia refuse to use advertisements?

We've all been there: We have something we urgently want to look up, so we head to wikipedia. But guess what? They don't have enough server computing power to handle all their data, so the homepage takes 40 seconds to load. This could easily be solved by making money via allowing advertisements on their site, but they refuse to allow this. They are such marxists that they would rather give their users a slow experience rather than collect the necessary revenue to buy adequate server equipment for their website. Why is it that they'd rather constantly beg people for donations rather than simply making money off ads? They can't possibly think the ads would drive people away from their site, because those constant pleas for donations are way more annoying than ads. @ Nunya: How was I trolling or a fail? It was a valid question.
